The February entry in Learning Ladder Academy’s Getting to Know You series is Miss Maddy, who enjoys teaching children and seeing them get excited about the world around them.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to go for walks and hiking in the area. I enjoy cooking with my husband and brainstorming flavor combinations. I have the problem of starting new hobbies, but then moving on to another one. I learned how to embroider recently, but now I am interested in water color painting.
Why did you choose this career?
I chose this career because I enjoy teaching children and seeing them get excited about the world around them. I have a passion for nature studies and I feel it’s important to teach children that nature plays a role in our lives and we should protect it.
Tell us about a favorite teaching moment or time with a child…
When I first started working with children, there was a child with special needs that would refuse to color with crayons. I sat with him for a while and with tons of encouragement, he finally picked up a crayon and colored the page he needed to for class that day. I was so proud of him for working through something that he struggled with.
Favorite place you’ve been and why?
Madame Cherie State Forest in Maine. My husband and I stumbled upon this park and decided to explore in the cold. On the trail we found stone ruins and a beautiful lake. It was one of those days that I wish could happen more often.
Best advice for parents:
At the Pre-School age kids want to help with everything. I know it tests your patience, but try to let them help as much as possible. In the future they will be more willing to help around the house and helping now gives them a sense of purpose that will build their self-esteem.
